In 1984, director Martin Bell hit the streets of Seattle with a film crew there, gained the trust of a bunch of street kids roughly thirteen to twenty years old, made this Academy Award nominated documentary about them. No judgments are passed or overt social commentaries made; the film is simply a depiction of their lives, how they survive on their own. Whether prostituting themselves, mugging others, pimping, or selling drugs, we find a certain humanness in these young souls not too unlike our own. Funny, sad, and without a doubt realistic, this one will certainly touch but never bore you. Roughly seven years later, Bell fictionalized the tale by making the film (American Heart,) with Edward Furlong and Jeff Bridges there playing characters that had to have been based on a father and son "team" found in Streetwise. Inspired by an article in "Life" magazine. Features music by Tom Waits. You will never forget, STREETWISE! Read more on this film.
